The Power of Design and Fabrication
What is Design?
According to the Merriam-WebDictionary, Design is: to create, fashion, execute, or construct according to plan.
It goes without saying, that that’s a pretty broad statement. Therefore, design can be found everywhere. From the alarm that wakes you up in the mornings, with its set features, volume levels and snooze button. To the toothbrush that you use before bed at the end of the night, with its perfectly placed bristles, comfortable grip and flexible plastic. Design permeates every facet of our existence.
The exponential power of design.
Design is meant to evolve with our developing issues. The goal is to have ideas that have a positive effect on others and our environment. Tony Fadell said it best “ It’s seeing the invisible problem, not just the obvious problem, that’s important”.
So WHY does The_Program exist?
Would I confuse you if I said that The_Program has always existed? Its physical manifestation is merely a projection of what your mind and the minds of the collective have been yearning for. The true essence of The_Program is to unite. To bring together to join in a transcendental experience. One that gives you no choice but to leave behind your everyday mundane problems, your time consuming gadgets, and refocus on your personal journey, that’s ultimately for the greater good of all.
HOW will The_Program achieve this?
This is where design and fabrication play an essential role. One cannot journey across the limits of time and space without it being set in an incredibly rich environment. The sounds that extend from The_Program are of the highest quality around. The lights and visuals that you experience are timed to perfection, they are easy on the eyes, yet incredibly moving in the mind. As a viewer you experience The_Program in its entirety. You may not be well aware of all the big and small pieces that work together in unisons to deliver The_Program experience. But they are there, are they did not happen without much planning, trial an error and constant redesigning.
We gave 3 F’s when designing.
Form, fit and function is the framework off which our designers used to characterize a part and determine its use within their build. When designing for The_Program we took into account the 3F’s of every single movingpart. The speaker mounts weren’t created without taking into account its size, feel and over all performance. The same goes for the wheels, roof, floor, throttle etc.
The ergonomics of The_Program were considered throughout the design and fabrication process. The location of the speakers, lights and monitors were chosen for the best user experience. The height of the turntables was chosen when having in mind the most comfortable position for a DJ. The throttle is located where the driver can easily and effortlessly drive the vessel.
The fabrication process.
Fabrication is the art of making something out of nothing. Taking raw materials, and building machines, parts, etc. The_Program was completely fabricated in house. For example, the throttle was designed by an in-house engineer, then the parts were CNC’d and assembled in shop. Every aspect, from the initial concept/idea, to the design process, to the final coming together of this project was overseen and executed in-house. The_Program is a culmination of a lot of small moving parts working together to create a transformable, roaming, exhibit art piece and a catalyst of journeys.
